I Only Know The Five Love Languages

Which languages do you speak and how did that impact your life?

The Five Love Languages come from a book by Gary Chapman. The idea is that people tend to feel loved in different ways.

  1. Words of Affirmation
    • Compliments
    • Encouragement
    • Saying “I love you”
    • Expressing appreciation
Example: “I’m proud of you” or “You mean a lot to me.”
  2. Acts of Service
    • Doing helpful things for someone
    • Running errands
    • Helping with chores
    • Taking care of responsibilities
Example: Making dinner or fixing something that needs repair.
  3. Receiving Gifts
    • Thoughtful presents
    • Small tokens of affection
    • Souvenirs that show someone was thinking of you
Example: Bringing home their favorite candy.
  4. Quality Time
    • Undivided attention
    • Meaningful conversations
    • Shared activities
    • Being fully present
Example: Going for a walk together and really listening to each other.
  5. Physical Touch

    • Holding handsHugsCuddlingKissesOther appropriate physical affection

Example: A reassuring hug after a difficult day. My love languages are receiving gifts and words of affirmation.

A quick way to figure out your primary love language is to ask yourself:

What hurts the most when it’s missing?

  • No compliments or appreciation? → Words of Affirmation
  • No help? → Acts of Service
  • No meaningful time together? → Quality Time
  • No affection? → Physical Touch
  • No thoughtful gifts? → Receiving Gifts

Which one do you think sounds the most like you?

Which love language are you?
