What does it mean to be a good person?
To me, being a good person means taking other people’s feelings into consideration in a lot of life’s situations. Also, to me, being a good person means advocating for those who unable advocate for themselves,, regardless of what the reasoning might be that they cannot.
There are so many reasons why a person may not be able to advocate for themselves. But a majority of the reasons, I think, are linked to how a person was raised. No, I’m not placing blame on parents for an adults inability to advocate for themselves. But I am saying that is where it starts.
Did parents allow their child to play an active role in decision making? An active role can be as simple as allowing a child choices instead of demands. Something as simple as giving them an option as to which shirt they want to wear for the day. To me, allowing a child small choices such as that builds confidence in the child. Something as simple as that can make a huge impact on how a child learns to make decisions in confidence as an adult.
Taking other people’s feelings into consideration is also important to me. It seems nowadays people are so caught up in themselves and their own ego and desires that it can be absolutely selfish. And I feel at times there is a bigger need to be selfless.
I remember growing up in an era where people watched out for each other, no matter their own personal preferences and beliefs. And I’m not meaning to intend to say that all people are selfish in this day and age. I just simply mean not everybody has the same heart. Some people are just softer hearted or kindhearted by nature. And some are not. That doesn’t make either person bad, right or wrong. It just simply is.
Lastly, I think a personal relationship with God can make a person good as well. Ie; following Jesus’ teachings on love and kindness under all circumstances can make a person “good” in my book as well. It shows that people are trying. And to me, just trying makes a big difference as well. If you have a personal relationship with God/Jesus, in time being kind just becomes automatic. Even if your idea of a personal relationship may consist of a just a simple prayer as you rise in the morning and as you go to bed at night.
God can change hearts. And he does it quite well.
